Core Web Vitals That Actually Move Rankings
LCP, INP and CLS are measurable. Compressing hero images and avoiding layout shift are high-ROI fixes.

Core Web Vitals are Google’s user-experience metrics for loading, interactivity and visual stability. They are not the only ranking factor, but poor scores correlate with bounce and lost conversions — and search systems use them as quality signals.
The three metrics that matter
- LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) — how quickly the main content appears. Aim for under ~2.5s on mobile for a “good” rating.
- INP (Interaction to Next Paint) — responsiveness to clicks and taps. Heavy JavaScript on the main thread is a common culprit.
- CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) — unexpected movement of content. Reserve space for images and ads; avoid inserting banners above existing content.
High-ROI fixes we apply first
- Hero and above-the-fold images — modern formats (WebP/AVIF), correct dimensions, priority hints, and compression.
- Font loading — subset fonts,
font-display: swap, avoid invisible text for long periods. - Critical CSS — do not block first paint on huge stylesheets; defer non-critical CSS where possible.
- JavaScript budget — ship less; split code; defer non-essential scripts (chat, analytics) until after interaction or idle.
- Image and iframe dimensions — always set width/height or aspect-ratio to reduce CLS.
- Server and caching — TTFB matters; use HTTP caching, CDN, and compression (Brotli/Gzip).
Lab vs field data
Lighthouse is useful for debugging. Search and real users care about field data (Chrome UX Report) over 28 days. A site can look fine in the lab on a fast desktop and fail on mid-range mobile networks in India. Test on throttled mobile conditions and watch Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report.
Third-party scripts
Analytics, tag managers, chat widgets and ad scripts often dominate main-thread time. Load them asynchronously, delay until consent where required, and audit what you actually need. Consent Mode and a proper cookie banner should not become an excuse for unbounded script weight.
Ongoing discipline
Performance is not a one-time project. Add a Lighthouse or WebPageTest check in CI for key templates. Review new features for image weight and layout stability. When marketing adds a popup or sticky bar, re-check CLS.
How we approach this at Martvill
For marketing sites and product frontends we measure LCP/INP/CLS early, fix the largest offenders first, and keep a performance budget in the definition of done. That supports both SEO and conversion — users who wait less complete more forms.
