Practical Security Habits for Small Teams
You do not need an enterprise security team to raise the bar. A few consistent habits prevent most common incidents.

Many breaches start with simple gaps: passwords in chat, admin panels open to the world, or dependencies years out of date. Small teams can close those gaps without a dedicated security department.
Habits that matter most
- HTTPS everywhere — including staging and admin tools
- Unique passwords + a password manager — never reuse production credentials
- Multi-factor authentication on email, cloud consoles, Git hosting, and admin panels
- Least privilege — separate accounts for deploy vs day-to-day; no shared “root” for everyone
- Secrets out of git — environment variables or a secret manager; rotate if a repo was ever public or shared widely
- Dependency updates — schedule monthly reviews; prioritise critical CVEs
- Backups you have restored once — untested backups are hopes, not plans
- Admin surfaces locked down — strong auth, CSRF protection, rate limits, no default passwords
Application basics
For web apps: parameterised queries (or an ORM that does), output encoding against XSS, CSRF tokens on state-changing requests, and careful file upload handling. Session cookies should be HttpOnly, Secure, and SameSite-appropriate.
For APIs: authentication on every sensitive endpoint, authorisation checks that are not only “user is logged in”, and clear separation between public and private data.
Human layer
Phishing remains effective. Train people to pause before clicking login links in email. Prefer passkeys or MFA. Have a simple incident checklist: who to call, how to rotate keys, how to take a compromised machine offline.
Vendors and chatbots
Third-party scripts and AI assistants expand your attack surface. Load only what you need, review permissions, and do not paste production secrets into external AI tools. Log access to customer data.
Compliance vs hygiene
Certifications matter for some buyers. Daily hygiene matters for everyone. Start with the list above; add formal controls as contracts require them.
How we build with security in mind
Martvill treats security as part of delivery: HTTPS and secure sessions by default, secrets outside the repository, CSRF on forms, and clear admin authentication. We help clients adopt the same habits so production stays boring — in the best way.
